Your Choice

There are Three Basic Types of Accountants:

  1. Basic Bookkeepers – low cost and good value for the service they provide. They have the real benefit that they usually build a good personal relationship with you and your business (and may be family or friends). Sadly, although appearing to be saving you money, they may not have the relevant up to date tax and accounting knowledge that you need. Unfortunately there is a great deal of difference between putting a number in a box and putting the best number in that box.
  2. Traditional Professional Accountants – more expensive, qualified and well experienced in tax and accounting. Technically able to add value and often providing a good service. In many practices your chosen accountant may not have time to really get to know you and your business and, due to time constraints, will probably delegate much of your work to an office junior.
  3. Value Added Accountants – also qualified and experienced in tax, accounting and business. Value Added Accountants spend the time and effort to develop a personal relationship with you and your business. They partner with your business throughout the year not just once a year. The key difference is that they find out about you and your business needs and combine this with their technical knowledge and business experience to give you a true Value Added service. This Value Added service can also include profit improvement and process change. Adding Value not Cost - creating an environment for Good Financial Health.

How to Choose Your Accountant:

I believe there are seven key considerations when choosing your accountant:

  1. First consider what you and your business need from an accountant,
  2. Ensure you are considering qualified accountants (ACA, ACCA or CIMA members) – I am a Fellow of CIMA (FCMA),
  3. Business Link (via the Yorkshire and Humberside Suppliers Database) operate a “Quality Assured” list of accountants - I am on this list as Simple Quality Solutions,
  4. Ask for recommendations/testimonials,
  5. Make a shortlist of say three accountants and meet them - I give a free consultation,
  6. Ask your short-listed accountants about their experience and who will actually be doing the work on your account – ensure the person you are seeing will be doing all the work not an office junior.

and most importantly

  1. Pick someone you get on with, can talk to and that will add value to your business.

What Can You Expect for Your Money:

At Simple Quality Solutions what you actually get is me.

You are buying more than my time, my experience and my technical expertise – you are buying into my passion and enthusiasm to add value to small businesses.

You will discover, if you haven’t already, once you set up in business, everyone is after your money. Although I am more than happy to do all the Accounting and Regulatory work for my clients, many of my clients have appreciated that I give them the opportunity to save money (including my fees) by showing them how to do many things themselves.

My aim is to ensure you get the most value from every pound you spend.

I currently spend a considerable amount of time with start-up businesses. I am one of the relatively few accountants that are both on the Business Link Yorkshire and Humberside Quality Assured Database as well as being subcontracted as a Business Link 1-2-1 adviser for start up businesses.

I am a Fellow of CIMA (FCMA) and a CIMA Member in Practice (MIP). I am also a member of the Federation of Small Businesses and of the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce.

I wanted to start my own business in May 2009 but did not have the knowhow or expertise to get it running let alone running quickly. I understood what I wanted to end up with but didn’t have a clue on how to get there. I was recommended to John by a colleague. That is when things started to become a lot clearer. The pain and confusion of setting up my business disappeared.

John understood my difficulties; he was able to get inside my business and started to make a positive impact very quickly. John’s knowledge and technical expertise have been invaluable not only to me but to my customers. It became clear very early that choosing John and paying his fees were one of the best investments we have ever made! We were so impressed with John we invited him to be a non exec Director of the new Ltd company. One of John’s first tasks was to help us sort out the paperwork needed for our first export deal.

I would recommend John and Simple Quality Solutions to anyone.

In the initial stages John explained clearly what was required in preparing the initial cash flow forecast and a business plan. This gave me the confidence to take the next stage in formally setting up the limited company, which again John helped me though step-by-step. This “pick and mix” approach suited the cautious approach I wanted to take in starting my business and John made himself available to talk through each subsequent stage.
